This survey was created by University of Michigan’s Central Student Government in order to address the demonstrated need from the student body to facilitate the off-campus housing search process. It was determined that the most effective way to address this need was to construct a database which ranks and rates various property managers to empower students’ voices in the housing process and help students make better informed decisions when searching for off-campus housing. The survey was targeted towards any University of Michigan Student who lived off campus during the 2017 – 2018 academic year. The below titles are links to interactive visualizations of the data that we received from the student body. You can download the full report here or at the bottom of the page. If you would like to share your experiences, please fill out the survey at this link!
The above link congregates all of the rent data that we collected and displays in an interactive map. Pan the map by dragging while holding Shift. Hover over data points to see which housing company owns the specific property, the specific rent, and the rating of the property (out of 10). Use the filters on the right to change the range of landlord ratings and rent costs.
The above link is an interactive bar chart that allows us to see the overall rating of the housing management companies (out of 10). This data can be filtered by specific housing management company using the selector on the right side, as well as average rating. If you hover over the specific bar, it will show the rating and the count of respondents for that specific housing company.
This above link is an interactive stacked bar chart to compare each of the different sentiments that we asked on the survey. Select the housing companies you are interested in, and the metrics that you value to see how they stack up to one another. An example of a sentiment is “I received a fair amount of my security deposit back” with answer choices from Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree. The data can be filtered by sentiment and housing company. It is also color coated by the sentiment scale we used. If you hover over a specific section, it will display the count of respondents as well.
